Richard Brook Award

Professor Pan received his Bachelor of Engineering degree from the University of Science and Technology Beijing in 1982, and earned his Master of Engineering (1987) and Doctor of Engineering (1990) degrees from Nagoya University, Japan. He gained industrial research experience at Kobe Steel, Ltd. from 1990 to 1992, before joining Tsinghua University in 1992. He was promoted to full Professor in 1997 and has remained in this position to date.

As a distinguished scholar in advanced ceramic materials, he previously served as Director of the State Key Laboratory of New Ceramics and Fine Processing (2007–2019), Member of the University Council of Tsinghua University (2015–2020), and a Fellow of the School of Engineering at the University of Tokyo. His pioneering research focuses on ceramic thermal barrier coatings, nanoceramic fibers and functional devices, as well as high-performance structural ceramics. He has authored 343 peer-reviewed international journal papers and holds 32 authorized patents, receiving a series of prestigious national and international academic awards for his outstanding contributions to ceramic science and engineering.

He undertakes extensive academic service duties across domestic and global academic communities. He holds core positions within the Chinese Ceramic Society and Beijing Powder Technology Association. On the international stage, he boasts influential academic leadership, serving as a Member of the World Academy of Ceramics, a member of the International Advisory Board of the European Ceramic Society, and a standing committee member of the Asia-Oceania Ceramic Federation. He also serves on the editorial boards of multiple authoritative international journals.
